How to Create the Best Project Brief

The quality of your project brief has the biggest impact on the quality of your first draft.

While we can absolutely work with minimal instructions, the more context you provide, the better we can understand your vision and deliver something that's closer to what you have in mind from the very first version.

The good news? You don't need to fill out every field. Only provide what's relevant to your project. This guide will explain how to get the most out of each section of the project brief.

Our Editing Style: As Collaborative As You Want It To Be

Every client works differently, and we want to fit into your workflow.

Some clients provide a detailed script, editing notes, timestamps, references, and clear instructions. In this case, we'll closely follow your direction and bring your vision to life.

Others simply send us footage with a general goal and give us creative freedom to make editing decisions. We're equally happy to take the lead and craft something we think works best.

Most clients fall somewhere in the middle.

There is no "correct" way to submit a project. Every project can have a different level of creative direction depending on your needs.

The Brief, Section by Section

Brand / Business Name

Tell us who the video is for. If this is your first project with us, this helps us understand your brand and maintain consistency across future edits.

Glow & Co

Video Title

A simple working title is all we need.

  • Weekly Marketing Tips #12
  • Product Launch Video
  • Podcast Episode 28
  • YouTube Short – Productivity Hack

Footage & Assets

Upload or link everything you'd like us to use. This might include:

  • Raw video footage
  • B-roll
  • Logos
  • Images
  • Brand assets
  • Screen recordings
  • Graphics
  • Audio files

The more organised your assets are, the faster we can get started.

Video Type

Tell us what kind of video you're creating. Examples include:

  • YouTube video
  • Podcast
  • Short-form content
  • Instagram Reel
  • TikTok
  • Advertisement
  • Course content
  • Testimonial
  • Corporate video

Knowing the format helps us make editing decisions that suit the content.

Where will this video be published? Different platforms have different editing styles.

  • YouTube
  • Instagram
  • TikTok
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Website
  • Internal use

Aspect Ratio

If you already know the aspect ratio you'd like, let us know. Common examples:

  • 16:9 (YouTube)
  • 9:16 (Reels, TikTok, Shorts)
  • 1:1 (Square posts)

If you're unsure, don't worry — we can help choose the appropriate format.

9:16

Resolution & File Format

If you have specific delivery requirements (such as 4K, 1080p, MP4, MOV, etc.), let us know here. Otherwise, we'll deliver using standard, high-quality export settings.

1080p

Project Outline & Editing Instructions

This is the most valuable section of the brief. Think of it as telling us everything you'd say if we were sitting together discussing the project.

Helpful things to include:

  • The goal of the video
  • Your target audience
  • The overall tone (professional, energetic, cinematic, funny, educational, etc.)
  • Sections to remove or emphasise
  • Important moments
  • Call-to-actions
  • Graphics or animations you'd like
  • Colour preferences
  • Branding requirements
  • Anything you definitely do — or don't — want included

More detail almost always leads to a better first draft.

See an example
This is a fun, high-energy ad for our new serum. Target audience is women 25–40 interested in skincare. Emphasise the before/after shots around the 15-second mark, and end on our logo with a ‘Shop Now’ call-to-action. Keep the tone upbeat, not clinical.

Script or Notes

If you already have a script, upload it! We're happy to edit strictly according to your script, or simply use it as a guide while making creative decisions where appropriate.

If you don't have a script, that's perfectly fine too. We can work with your footage and the project outline you've provided. Every project is different, and we're happy to adapt to the level of direction you want to give us.

See an example
Attached is our 150-word voiceover script — please match the cuts to the pacing of the narration.

Multiple Deliverables

If your project will be completed over multiple stages, let us know how you'd like each milestone handled. For example:

Draft 1
  • Main edit
  • Basic pacing
  • Remove mistakes
Draft 2
  • Motion graphics
  • Sound design
  • Music
Final Draft
  • Final revisions
  • Colour grading
  • Export all required versions

This helps us structure larger projects more efficiently.

See an example
Draft 1: rough cut with voiceover synced. Draft 2: add motion graphics for the call-to-action and background music. Final: colour grade and export both 9:16 and 1:1 versions.

Audio & Music

Tell us what you're looking for. You can specify:

  • Background music genre
  • Energy level
  • Cinematic vs upbeat
  • Minimal vs dramatic
  • Sound effects
  • Podcast cleanup
  • Voice enhancement

If you're unsure, we're happy to choose music that matches the style of your video.

See an example
Looking for upbeat, minimal electronic music — similar energy to a Glossier ad. No sound effects needed.

Target Run Time

An estimated duration helps us pace the edit appropriately.

  • 30 seconds
  • 60 seconds
  • 8–10 minutes
  • Under 20 minutes
See an example
Aiming for 30 seconds, 45 seconds max.

Subtitles

Let us know if you'd like subtitles included throughout the video. If you have any specific subtitle preferences (such as colours, animations, or branding), include those in your project notes.

See an example
Yes

Deadline

Please include your desired delivery date. If your project has a fixed launch date or is time-sensitive, the earlier we know, the better we can plan production.

See an example
Friday, March 14th.

References (Our Favourite Part!)

If there's one thing that consistently helps us create better first drafts, it's reference videos. These don't have to be videos you've created yourself. They can be:

  • YouTube videos
  • Instagram Reels
  • TikToks
  • Commercials
  • Podcasts
  • Documentary edits
  • Motion graphics examples
  • Any video that captures the style you're aiming for

The reference might showcase:

  • Editing pace
  • Music style
  • Colour grading
  • Motion graphics
  • Camera movement
  • Subtitles
  • Transitions
  • Humour
  • Overall vibe

The more references you provide, the better we can understand your vision.

Don't worry if each reference only demonstrates one thing. One video might have the perfect subtitles, another might have great pacing, while a third has exactly the kind of music you're after. Send them all — we'll combine the inspiration into a final edit that feels uniquely yours.

Final Tips

To get the best possible first draft:

  • Provide as much context as you can.
  • Upload all the assets we'll need.
  • Include scripts or notes if you have them.
  • Tell us what the video is trying to achieve.
  • Share reference videos whenever possible.
  • Let us know what matters most to you.

Remember, we're here to make the editing process easy. Whether you want us to follow detailed instructions to the letter or give us room to be creative, we'll adapt our workflow to suit each individual project.

The better we understand your vision, the closer your very first draft will be to the final video.
